Job Description

Lead on-site electrical maintenance projects for the County of Hawai'i in Hilo.

Electrician, BC-10

Installs, maintains, and repairs electrical wiring systems, electrical and mechanical equipment, and appurtenant fixtures; and performs other related duties as required. There is one (1) immediate permanent full-time vacancy with the Department of Public Works – Traffic Division in Hilo.

Working Hours for vacancy with the Department of Public Works: Monday – Friday; 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Special Working Conditions for vacancy with the Department of Public Works: Applicants must be available for stand-by duty and be available for immediate response in cases of emergency (after hours/days off).

Examples of Duties

  • Installs conduits, transformers, traffic signals, pull boxes, plugs, convenience outlets, and switches.
  • Rewires buildings.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs pumps, motors, and various other types of electrical equipment and apparatus.
  • Repairs and replaces broken or defective parts in motors, switches, and fixtures.
  • Locates, tests, and repairs trouble in electrical circuits and equipment.
  • Replaces fuses and incandescent and fluorescent lights.
  • Plans electrical installations.
  • Inspects traffic signal and street lighting systems.
  • Inspects and makes repairs of switch gears, registers, capacitor banks, power circuits, blowers, generators, and other related electrical equipment.
  • Makes sketches of proposed wiring systems to facilitate repair work.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints and working plans.
  • Estimates cost, time, and materials needed for repair and maintenance work to be performed.
  • Reports need for major repairs.
  • May supervise others; supervises trades helpers as assigned.
  • May operate a vehicle to transport materials and employees; may operate a heavy truck with aerial bucket (GVW of 33,000 pounds).
  • Performs services in other trades when not utilized as an electrician.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to:

  • completion of the eighth grade, and
  • four (4) years of experience as an apprentice or helper under a journeylevel electrician, and
  • possession of a valid State of Hawai'i Journeylevel Electrician's License at time of filing (scan and attach a copy of your valid license to your application), and
  • possession of a valid State of Hawai'i Driver License (Class 3) or any other valid comparable driver license at time of filing, (you will be required to submit your valid driver's license at time of hire), and
  • for CDL positions, at time of job interview, candidates must possess a good driving record certified by a traffic abstract confirming no DUI convictions, license revocations, or suspensions for three (3) years preceding and no moving violations for one (1) year preceding. A current traffic abstract is valid for 30 days from date of issuance by the district court. (You will be required to submit your current traffic abstract at time of job interview.)

  • as applicable to the position, possession of a valid State of Hawai'i Commercial Driver License of the appropriate class with the appropriate endorsement(s) is required prior to completion of probation. (The immediate vacancy with the Department of Public Works requires a valid State of Hawai'i Commercial Driver License Class B prior to completion of probation).
  • as applicable to the position, possession of a current Department of Transportation Medical Examiner's Certificate prior to appointment. (The immediate vacancy with the Department of Public Works requires a current Department of Transportation Medical Examiner's Certificate prior to appointment.)
