Assist detention staff to supervise youth and maintain order at the Juvenile Detention Facility
Juvenile Detention Facility Extra Help
Under close supervision, and in accordance with guidelines and procedures, assists regular staff in the supervision, custodial care and limited counseling of a group of youth or adults placed under the jurisdiction of the Chief Probation Officer. Staff assignments are limited to the Juvenile Detention Facility.
This class is defined as an extra help class, and will only be used to provide temporary replacements for regular Juvenile Detention Facility staff who are absent due to vacation, sick leave, military duty, leave without pay, or other reasons. It is distinguished from Detention Officer I in that this class is not expected to perform the full range of peace officer duties and responsibilities required of a Detention Officer I, such as independently engaging in the restraint, arrest, or handcuffing of youth or adults. Additionally, given that incumbents have not completed the Juvenile Corrections Officer Core Course provided by the CA Board of State and Community Correction – Standards and Training for Corrections Program, their work is subject to detailed and frequent review. Detention Officer – Extra Help staff may not work more than 1,000 hours during any fiscal year.
Essential Functions
- Assists regular staff in supervising and observing youth at the Juvenile Detention Facility.
- Assists regular staff in maintaining order, security, and discipline of youth; may supervise youth in the performance of housekeeping and light cleaning duties.
- May provide instruction to youth in the proper use of tools and equipment and work safety; may assist regular staff supervising youth working around buildings.
- May assist regular staff in the transportation of youth, both in and out of custody in restraints and non-restraint situations.
- Observes and reports on group and individual behavior; logs information and prepares related paperwork for review by regular staff.
- Watches for changes in moods or attitudes among the youth that might indicate a security or safety risk, reports such observations to regular staff.
- Assists regular staff in promoting positive attitudes among the youth through instruction and discipline.
- Assists regular staff with related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Graduation from high school or possession of G.E.D. Age: Applicants must be a minimum 20 years of age at time of appointment. Background Requirements: 1. Shall not have been convicted of a felony in this State or any other state or in any federal jurisdiction which would have been a felony if committed in this State; 2. Shall have good moral character; 3. Must be in good physical condition, medically and psychologically fit to perform the assigned duties. License: Positions in this classification require incumbents to possess and maintain a valid California driver's license, Class C or higher, to carry out job related duties. Ability to: learn the principles of supervision; learn the purpose and methods of discipline as applied to youth in confinement and group dynamics; learn and follow safety and security procedures; develop a working knowledge of the development, needs, and problems of youth; work effectively with adults and youth; think and act quickly in an emergency and stressful situation; interpret and enforce institutional rules and policies; follow and communicate departmental rules and regulations.
