Police Investigator

This position investigates crimes, interviews victims and witnesses, collects and preserves evidence, arrests crime suspects, and conducts surveillance operations. Major criminal investigations that could exceed agency resources are reviewed on a case-by-case basis by the Chief of Police and are coordinated by the Lieutenant.

Minimum qualifications include three years of law enforcement experience. Experience substitution is available for every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university, with a maximum substitution of 60 semester hours which substitutes for two years of experience. Necessary special requirements include being at least 18 years of age, possession of a current Louisiana driver's license, and an active Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification may be required. An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

Job duties include conducting preliminary and follow-up investigations, interviewing witnesses, victims, and suspects, providing feedback to the appropriate people concerning case status, and collecting and documenting evidence. The position also requires executing arrest and search warrants, completing required paperwork, reports, and return of service documents, and the ability to work calmly under conditions of high stress, physical, and emotional circumstances.

Position-specific details include this vacancy being announced as a classified position open to all qualified applicants and may be filled as a probationary or promotional appointment. The work location is for a Police Investigator for the McNeese University Police Department. The work schedule may include rotating 12-hour shifts, overtime, working weekends, holidays, shift work, and 24-hour call. Compensation includes a special entrance pay rate.
